This bar cookie became popular in the roaring 20’s. You know it’s good to have lasted that long. It is still popular for picnics, lunch boxes, and of course there is always that decadent dessert, the brownie sundae. This particular recipe produces a wonderful moist, chewy, chocolate treat that will be one of your favorites too.

- 2 ounces unsweetened chocolate
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 eggs
- 3/4 cup flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts optional

Instructions
- Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a square 8x8 inch baking pan. Melt chocolate and shortening over low heat. Beat in sugar and eggs. Stir in flour, baking powder, and salt, until blended. Mix in nuts. Spread in pan. Bake 30 to 35 minutes, or until top has a dull crust and a slight imprint remains when touched lightly. Cool slightly and cut in squares. May be frosted if desired.
